Guggul

Botanical Name : Commiphora mukul

Plant Family : Burseracae

Common name : Guggul, Gum Guggul, Guggula, Gugulipid, Mukul myrrh tree.

Distribution : Guggul plant grows throughout India ; mostly in Bengal, Mysore, Rajputana, Sind, Assam.

Parts used : Oleo gum resin

Introduction : Organic Guggul is a highly valued botanical medicine used in Ayurveda. Guggul is bitter, heating and quickly assimilating gum resin. Upon injury Guggul tree exudes a yellowish resinous sap out of incisions that are made in its bark. The trees are tapped during the winter to acquire these oleoresin compounds, which have been used extensively by Ayurvedic physicians for centuries to treat a wide variety of disorders. The most scientifically proven application for the use of gugulipid pertains to its ability to lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides and to improve the LDL-to-HDL cholesterol ratio in patients with hypercholesterolemia and related lipid disorders.

Plant Description : Commiphora Mukul ranges from a woody shrub to a small tree of 4 to 6 feet tall with spineous branches. The leaflets are 1-3 in number and rhomboid to ovate in shape, irregularly toothed margin. The ash-coloured bark comes off in rough flakes exposing the underbark which also peels off in thin papery rolls exuding a yellowish resin called Guggul that has a balsamic odor. This resin is used for medicinal purposes. Flowers small, brown to pink in color. Fruit-drupe, red, ovate, accuminate in shape. Guggul tree remains without any foliage for most of the year.

Collection : A healthy tree yields 250-500 grams of resin in one season. Guggul plants typically begin yielding resin after five years during the winter months.

History : The classical treatise on Ayurvedic medicine, Sushrita Samhita, describes the use of guggul for a wide variety of conditions, including arthritis, obesity, weight-reducing effect, cardiovascular protective effect, its anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects. Encouraged by the Ayurvedic description of this herb scientists have conducted clinical trials and the research resulted in the development of a natural cholesterol lowering substance that is safer and more effective than many cholesterol-lowering drugs. Gugulipid was granted approval in India for marketing as a lipid lowering drug in 1986.

Phytochemicals : Guggul contains resin, volatile oils, and gum. It contains phytosterols named guggulsterones, organic acids, aromatic acids, diterpenes, lignans, sterols, steroids, esters and fatty acid alcohols. The oleoresin contains 0.37% essential oil mainly Myrecene, Dimyrecene, and Polymyrecene.

Action : Hypolipidemic, Antioxidant, Antiseptic, Carminative, Expectorant, Thyroid gland stimulant, Emmenagogue.
