Introduction : Guggulipid is the extract of the gum resin called Guggul of the Commiphora mukul tree. Gugulipid is a natural health product used primarily to reduce elevated blood cholesterol levels. It has been used for many years as a hypocholesterolemic agent in India.

GUGGULSTERONES : Guggul extract isolates the ketonic steroid compounds guggulsterones from the plant. These compounds are the reason for guggul’s lipid-lowering powers. The primary chemical constituents of Guggul include phytosterols, gugulipids, and guggulsterones. Ketone fraction that is extracted from the resin contains the most potent cholesterol lowering components. This is composed of C21 or C27 steroids, with the major components being Z- and E-guggulsterone.

How does Guggul work? The lipid regulating effects of Guggul result from its thyroid regulating action, and its combined effects of inhibiting the biosynthesis of cholesterol's thyroid hormones. Z-Guggalsterone, extracted from the gum resin is such an agent. The plant is especially useful where T3 (Triiodothyronine) values of the thyroid are low. Ayurvedic medicine for centuries has prescribed Guggul because of its healing actions which today's technologically equipped scientists are only just discovering. Increased levels of Catecholamines, dopamine and beta-hydroxylase found after taking Guggul suggest another possible mechanism of lowering lipid levels in the blood. The high affinity binding anion exchange of Guggul has also been suggested to contribute to its Hypolipidemic activity.

Methods of Preparation : Contemporary Standardized Methods
A HPLC method has a validated quantitation range of 15-85 microg/ml for E-guggulsterone and 25-130 microg/ml for Z-guggulsterone with a precision of +/-2% S.D. and a recovery of > 99.5%.

Benefits of Guggul Extract

  1. It is an extremely safe product relative to most cholesterol-lowering drugs used in modern medicine especially when compared to the commonly used statin drugs, which inhibit the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme and can lead to liver damage. At the same time, gugulipid shows a similar therapeutic effect to many cholesterol-lowering drugs, without any apparent risk of liver damage.

  2. In addition to protecting against the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, gugulipid provides regression of preexisting plaques, plus mildly inhibits platelet aggregation and promotes fibrinolysis, which are factors involved in stroke and embolic events.

Adverse Effects : Studies with the crude oleoresin reported numerous side effects, including diarrhoea, anorexia, abdominal pain, and skin rash. Modern extracts are more purified, and far fewer side effects have been reported with long-term use.

Drug Interaction
Patients should consult a health care practitioner before taking guggul along with any other herbs or medications.

  • Guggul lipid may increase the potency of anti-inflammatory pain killers, drugs used to lower blood pressure such as Vasotec, muscle relaxants Valium, lithium, and diuretics such as Lasix.

  • It may reduce the effects of anti-arrythmic such as digoxin and anti-diabetic Glucotrol drugs. Anyone taking prescription drugs should consult with a qualified herbalist before taking guggul extract.

  • Guggul can be problematic for people being treated for thyroid conditions. Since guggul stimulates production of thyroid hormone, it may alter the dosage requirements for thyroid replacement medication.

  • It can also reduce the availability and effectiveness of the heart medications propranolol as Inderal and diltiazem as Cardizem.

Precautions : It is contraindicated in hyperthyroidism due to thyroid stimulation and in pregnancy due to the emmenagogue effects.
